The Great Conversation: Truth, Morality and the Ideas that Formed Our Modern World, Pt 1 (Fall 2026)
Class Type

This course invites students into the great conversation that shaped the modern world and continues to shape the world they are inheriting. Tracing the development of Western thought from the Renaissance through the Victorian era over two semesters, students engage selections from The Story of Civilization alongside classic works of literature and philosophy from each period through seminar discussion, oral exams, writing, and meaningful projects.

In the spirit of John Milton, students seek to “behold the bright countenance of truth in the quiet and still air of delightful studies,” wrestling with enduring questions of truth, authority, freedom, corruption, power, and the divine nature and purpose of the human soul. As they examine shifts in faith, reason, and economic thought, students consider what is gained and what may be lost when societies move away from moral foundations, observing the pendulum of history as it swings to extremes and learning from its patterns.

Emphasizing virtue, moral responsibility, and thoughtful inquiry, the course prepares students to discern clearly, live with integrity, and lead with purpose in a rapidly changing world. Additional literature TBA.

Taking even one course of this caliber can make a transformative, lasting difference for students that will last a lifetime.
